Quick answer

Common IQ-test questions include matrices, verbal similarities, vocabulary, quantitative patterns, working-memory sequences, spatial tasks, speeded searches and open-ended reasoning. Professional batteries mix formats because no single puzzle measures intelligence completely.

There is no universal bank of “IQ questions.” A professional battery combines different tasks because each format samples a different part of cognitive performance. An online test may rely heavily on multiple-choice patterns; an individually administered battery can include spoken explanations, blocks, memory sequences, timed symbol searches and examiner-scored responses.

The examples below are original teaching examples. They show what a task is trying to do without copying WAIS, Stanford–Binet, Raven, Mensa or any other secure item.

The free IQ test uses 30 original verbal, numerical, logical and spatial questions. Its estimated band is for low-stakes self-exploration, not diagnosis or formal eligibility.

A question can load on more than one ability. Mental arithmetic may involve quantitative knowledge, attention and working memory. A block task can involve spatial reasoning, motor coordination and speed. Subtest labels summarize the dominant demand; they do not isolate a single brain process.

1. Matrix and pattern reasoning questions

Matrix questions present a grid or sequence governed by one or more visual rules. The missing piece might depend on rotation, addition or subtraction of shapes, alternation, symmetry, count, position or a combination of rules.

Original example

A sequence shows: one black circle, two white circles, three black circles, four white circles. What comes next?

Answer: five black circles, if both the count and fill alternate. The important step is identifying both rules rather than continuing only one.

Raven-style matrices are strongly associated with this format, while comprehensive batteries also include matrix or figure-weight tasks. Matrix reasoning reduces spoken-language demand, but it is not a complete measure of every cognitive domain. Read verbal versus nonverbal IQ for the trade-off.

2. Verbal similarities and analogy questions

These tasks ask for the relationship between concepts rather than a memorized definition. A weak answer names a surface feature; a stronger answer identifies the shared category or principle.

Original example

How are a map and a blueprint alike?

Possible strong answer: both are scaled symbolic representations used to plan or understand a physical space. “Both use lines” is true but less abstract.

Scoring can depend on the quality and abstraction of the response, which is one reason professional administration is not always reducible to an answer key. Language background and expressive difficulties also matter.

3. Vocabulary and acquired-knowledge questions

Vocabulary, information and verbal comprehension tasks sample crystallized intelligence: knowledge built through language, education and experience. They can ask for a definition, an explanation of a social concept or factual knowledge appropriate to the norm group.

Original example

Define “reluctant” and use it in a sentence.

Possible answer: reluctant means unwilling or hesitant; “She was reluctant to sign before reading the contract.”

This is not merely a spelling test. The examiner is interested in the accuracy and precision of the concept. Because acquired knowledge depends on opportunity and language, interpretation must consider background rather than treating every low verbal score as a reasoning deficit.

4. Quantitative and number-pattern questions

Quantitative tasks can involve number series, balance relationships, mental arithmetic or reasoning about quantities. They are not necessarily advanced mathematics. The challenge may be discovering a rule, keeping intermediate values active or choosing an efficient representation.

Original example

A machine doubles a number and then subtracts 3. It outputs 11. What number went in?

Answer: 7, because 7×2−3=11.

Someone can have strong quantitative reasoning without advanced coursework, while learned mathematics can still influence performance. The exact task and norm group determine what the score can support.

5. Working-memory questions

Working-memory tasks require holding information while doing something to it. Repeating a sequence in the same order is mainly short-term storage; reversing, sorting or updating it adds mental manipulation.

Original example

Remember 7–2–9–4. Now say the numbers from smallest to largest.

Answer: 2–4–7–9.

6. Spatial construction and mental-rotation questions

Spatial tasks ask the examinee to analyze parts and wholes, rotate forms mentally, reproduce a design or judge how pieces fit. A professional battery may use blocks or physical response materials; an online test usually converts the idea into images and selectable answers.

Original example

Imagine the capital letter L rotated 180 degrees. Which option has the same orientation?

Reasoning: both the vertical stem and the foot reverse position. Rotating only one part is a reflection, not a 180-degree rotation.

Motor or visual impairments can affect some spatial tasks independently of reasoning. A qualified examiner selects and interprets measures with those access needs in mind.

7. Processing-speed questions

Processing-speed tasks are often simple by design. The score comes from how many easy visual or naming operations are completed accurately under standardized time pressure. Typical forms include symbol search, coding or rapid naming.

Original example

For each row, decide whether either target symbol appears in a group of five symbols. Work as accurately as possible for a fixed interval.

What is scored: speed and errors across many trials, not the difficulty of one row.

8. Open-ended reasoning questions

Most consumer IQ tests use selectable answers because scoring is simple and consistent. Open-ended tasks can ask the test-taker to explain a rule, compare alternatives, generate a question, identify an assumption or show how a conclusion would change under uncertainty.

Original example

A city’s bus use rose after fares were reduced. Give two explanations besides “lower fares caused the entire increase,” then name one piece of data that would help distinguish them.

What a strong response does: proposes plausible alternatives—such as a fuel-price rise or route expansion—and requests relevant comparison data.

Open responses can reveal reasoning that a multiple-choice answer hides, but scoring needs a defensible rubric. The question format is only one part of validity. The AERA/APA/NCME testing standards treat validity as evidence for a proposed score interpretation and use—not a permanent badge attached to a list of items.

Why secure questions should not be copied—and how to prepare honestly

Professional test items are controlled because repeated public exposure changes what the score means. The APA’s statement on secure psychological tests emphasizes maintaining item security and following publisher procedures. Posting answer keys or reconstructed items can make future administrations less fair and less interpretable.

What kind of questions are on an IQ test?

Common task families include matrix reasoning, verbal similarities, vocabulary or knowledge, quantitative patterns, working-memory sequences, spatial construction, processing-speed searches and sometimes open-ended reasoning. The exact mix depends on the test and age group.

Are IQ test questions multiple choice?

Some are, especially online and matrix questions. Professional batteries also use spoken responses, timed paper tasks, manipulatives, memory repetition and examiner-scored answers. Format is part of what the subtest measures.

Can I see real WAIS or Stanford–Binet questions online?

Secure professional items should not be reproduced. Publishing them can undermine fairness and future score interpretation. Educational examples can demonstrate the task family without copying a protected item.

Do IQ tests include math questions?

They can include quantitative reasoning, arithmetic or number patterns, but they are not ordinary school mathematics exams. The task may test mental manipulation, rule discovery or working memory as much as learned calculation.

Can practice improve IQ test performance?

Practice can improve familiarity, pacing and comfort with formats. It can also produce retest effects. That is not automatically the same as a comparable change in general cognitive ability, so prior exposure should be considered when interpreting a score.
