Most online IQ tests are either too shallow to be meaningful or too expensive to access. DesperateMinds exists to change that.
Human cognitive ability is one of the most researched and misunderstood topics in all of psychology. For decades, the best assessments — the ones used by clinicians, researchers, and psychologists — were locked behind professional licensing requirements and fees that put them out of reach for most people.
DesperateMinds was built on a simple conviction: every person deserves access to a rigorous, honest, and detailed understanding of how their mind works. Not a rough estimate. Not a number pulled from a poorly calibrated quiz. A real cognitive profile — the kind that tells you something genuinely useful about yourself.
We are a team of psychometricians, cognitive scientists, and software engineers who were frustrated by the gap between what the science of intelligence measurement can do and what most online tests actually deliver. So we built something better.
Every question is calibrated using established psychometric methodology. Our scoring uses normed conversion tables grounded in published intelligence research.
We tell you exactly what each test measures, how it is scored, and what the limitations are. No inflated scores to make you feel good. No hidden charges.
Our assessments are grounded in peer-reviewed research on cognitive ability, personality psychology, and neuropsychological assessment.
Intelligence is not a single number. It is a profile — a pattern of relative strengths and limitations across multiple cognitive domains. Our IQ assessments measure four primary domains that consistently emerge from factor-analytic research as the core components of general cognitive ability:
Each domain is scored separately and then combined into a composite IQ score using a weighted formula. The composite is converted to a standard IQ scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 — the same scale used by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and Stanford-Binet, the two gold-standard clinical instruments in cognitive assessment.
We believe in being honest about what online cognitive assessment can and cannot do. Our tests are rigorous screening instruments. They are not equivalent to a full clinical assessment administered by a licensed psychologist — which typically takes 4–6 hours, involves multiple validated instruments, and includes clinical interpretation in context.
What our tests do provide is a reliable, well-calibrated estimate of your cognitive profile that is meaningfully more accurate than most online alternatives. Our Tier 3 and Tier 4 assessments, which include AI-evaluated open-answer reasoning questions, approach the depth of abbreviated professional instruments at a fraction of the cost.
For most people — exploring their own cognitive profile, preparing for aptitude testing, understanding their relative strengths, or simply satisfying genuine curiosity — our assessments provide real and valuable insight.
The CMIAS — Comprehensive Multidimensional Intelligence Assessment System — is DesperateMinds' most advanced cognitive instrument. Developed by Dr. Sarwar Naseer as part of his original research in applied psychometrics, it goes beyond what any standard IQ test measures.
Rather than relying on multiple-choice questions, the CMIAS uses 56 fully open-ended questions evaluated by AI across seven cognitive dimensions: Novel Problem Solving, Conceptual Depth of Thinking, Quantitative and Qualitative Generalisation, Abstract and Integrative Cognition, Uncertainty Calibration, Cross-Contextual Extrapolation, and Synthesis Under Constraint.
The result is a seven-dimensional cognitive profile, a composite score, and an IQ equivalent — the most thorough picture of cognitive ability we offer. The CMIAS is available now as our Tier 4 assessment. Further instruments exploring additional dimensions of psychological assessment are in development and will be introduced progressively throughout 2026.
