Our Mission

Human cognitive ability is one of the most researched and misunderstood topics in all of psychology. For decades, the best assessments — the ones used by clinicians, researchers, and psychologists — were locked behind professional licensing requirements and fees that put them out of reach for most people.

DesperateMinds was built on a simple conviction: every person deserves access to a rigorous, honest, and detailed understanding of how their mind works. An educational estimate and a detailed profile of performance across several cognitive domains — designed to offer something genuinely useful for personal reflection.

DesperateMinds was founded by Dr. Sarwar Naseer, a dental surgeon whose long-standing interest in how the mind reasons led him to design a cognitive-assessment framework more rigorous than the quizzes that dominate the web. Today our articles are researched and written by Adam Imran, a psychology researcher with an MS in Clinical Psychology, and our assessment technology is built by Abubakar Tahir. Our Methodology

Intelligence is not a single number. It is a profile — a pattern of relative strengths and limitations across multiple cognitive domains. Our assessments cover four cognitive domains commonly examined in reasoning and cognitive-performance tasks:

• Verbal Reasoning — the ability to understand language, identify relationships between concepts, and reason through verbal analogies and arguments.
• Spatial Reasoning — the ability to mentally manipulate shapes, identify patterns in visual sequences, and reason about geometric relationships.
• Logical Reasoning — the ability to identify rules in abstract sequences, apply deductive and inductive logic, and solve novel problems without prior knowledge.
• Working Memory — the ability to hold and manipulate information in short-term memory while simultaneously processing new inputs.

Each domain is scored separately and then combined into a composite score using a weighted formula. The composite is displayed using the familiar IQ-style scale of mean 100 and standard deviation 15. This shared numeric convention does not make the assessment equivalent to the WAIS, Stanford-Binet, or another professionally administered test.

What Our Tests Are — And Are Not

We believe in being honest about what online cognitive assessment can and cannot do. Our tests are structured educational assessments. They are not equivalent to a full clinical assessment administered by a licensed psychologist — which typically takes 4–6 hours, involves multiple validated instruments, and includes clinical interpretation in context.

What our tests do provide is a structured estimate of performance across the cognitive domains covered by the assessment. Our Tier 3 and Tier 4 assessments include AI-evaluated open-answer reasoning questions, providing greater response depth than standard multiple-choice online quizzes.

For most people — exploring their own cognitive profile, preparing for aptitude testing, understanding their relative strengths, or simply satisfying genuine curiosity — our assessments provide real and valuable insight.

The CMIAS Assessment

The CMIAS — Comprehensive Multidimensional Intelligence Assessment System — is DesperateMinds' most comprehensive assessment. It was created by our founder, Dr. Sarwar Naseer, as an original framework informed by published research and reasoning concepts that goes beyond what a standard IQ test measures.

Rather than relying on multiple-choice questions, the CMIAS uses 56 open-ended questions, each evaluated by AI, across seven distinct cognitive dimensions:

• Novel Problem Solving — reasoning through genuinely unfamiliar problems with no rehearsed method to fall back on.
• Cross-Domain Transfer — recognising the same underlying structure across unrelated fields and carrying a solution from one to another.
• Question Quality Generation — the quality of the questions a mind generates, not only the answers it produces.
• Assumption Identification — surfacing the hidden premises an argument quietly depends on.
• Uncertainty Calibration — how closely stated confidence matches actual accuracy.
• Conceptual Compression and Expansion — moving fluently between levels of abstraction without losing the essence of an idea.
• Speed of Updating — how readily and completely beliefs revise in the face of new evidence.

The result is a seven-dimensional cognitive profile, a composite score, and an estimated IQ-equivalent — the most thorough picture of cognitive ability we offer. The CMIAS is available now as our Tier 4 assessment.
