Quick answer

“Types of IQ tests” sounds like a request for a list. The useful answer is a decision map. A psychologist choosing a battery for an adult with memory complaints is solving a different problem from a school screening a year group, a parent seeking a gifted evaluation, or an adult taking an online test out of curiosity.

Tests differ along at least four axes: who they are built for, which abilities they sample, how they are administered, and what decision the score is meant to support. A familiar name does not make a test suitable for every purpose. The intended use is part of the test.

Eight types of IQ tests compared

These are practical formats, not mutually exclusive boxes. A child battery can also be comprehensive, individual and partly nonverbal.

IQ test and intelligence test are often used as synonyms, but a professional assessment is more than a question set. It includes standardized instructions, age-appropriate norms, scoring rules, observations, referral context and an interpretation tied to a stated use.

1–4. Comprehensive individual batteries

Comprehensive batteries are the main tools for a detailed cognitive profile. They combine subtests because no single question format captures intelligence adequately. The composite score is usually accompanied by domain or index scores, and the examiner considers whether the overall score is a coherent summary of the profile.

WAIS-5: adult cognitive assessment

The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition, published in 2024, is designed for ages 16:0 through 90:11. Pearson lists a 45-minute seven-subtest Full Scale IQ route and about 60 minutes for the ten primary index subtests. Its primary domains are verbal comprehension, visual spatial ability, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed.

That breadth is why the WAIS is not simply a harder online quiz. Some tasks require spoken answers, manipulatives, timed visual search or active memory. The examiner follows start, reversal and discontinue rules and can add subtests when the referral question requires more detail.

WISC-V and WPPSI-IV: age-specific Wechsler batteries

The WISC-V covers ages 6:0–16:11 and uses the same five broad domains. The WPPSI-IV is built for ages 2:6–7:7, with instructions and tasks adapted for preschool and early-primary development. An age-specific battery is not merely an easier adult test: item content, floors, ceilings, norms and administration are designed around developmental level.

Stanford–Binet 5: a broad-age battery

The Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition covers ages 2 to 85+. Riverside states a typical administration time of about five minutes per subtest rather than one universal full-battery duration. The SB5 samples five factors in verbal and nonverbal formats: fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing and working memory.

KABC-II and broader cognitive batteries

The Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, Second Edition Normative Update is another individually administered child battery. Pearson lists ages 3–18 and different core routes based on Luria or CHC interpretation models. Other systems, including Woodcock–Johnson cognitive batteries, may be selected when cognitive and achievement information need to be integrated.

5. Nonverbal and matrix reasoning tests

Nonverbal tests reduce the amount of vocabulary, reading or spoken response needed. Raven-style matrices ask the examinee to infer the rule governing a visual pattern and select the missing piece. Other nonverbal instruments use pictorial categories, sequences or geometric analogies.

This format is useful when expressive language would obscure reasoning—for example, with some multilingual examinees or people with speech difficulties. It is also narrower. A matrix score says much less about verbal comprehension, acquired knowledge, auditory working memory or processing speed than a broad battery does.

The phrase “culture-free IQ test” is too strong. Schooling, familiarity with abstract diagrams, instructions, motivation, disability access and the norm sample can all affect performance. 6. School and group ability tests

Group tests trade individualized observation for scale. Riverside describes the CogAT as three batteries—verbal, quantitative and nonverbal—each with multiple subtest formats. These tests can help schools identify reasoning patterns, plan instruction or screen for further evaluation.

A group score should not be treated as interchangeable with a full clinical IQ. The setting, purpose and evidence are different. A group test may be exactly right for a school-wide question and insufficient for a child-specific diagnostic question.

7–8. Brief screeners and online IQ estimates

Brief and abbreviated tests

A short form uses fewer subtests to answer a narrower question faster. It may be used for triage, research, a rough estimate or deciding whether a comprehensive assessment is warranted. The trade-off is straightforward: less testing time means less domain coverage and usually more uncertainty.

Online tests

Online tests range from careful, transparent reasoning batteries to entertainment quizzes with no disclosed scoring basis. A credible online page should tell you the number of questions, time limit, domains, price, result format and limits. It should not promise a clinical diagnosis, guaranteed precision or admission to an organization.

Technology adds its own conditions: screen size, input method, connection, interruptions and unsupervised help. The International Test Commission’s technology-based assessment guidelines emphasize design, delivery, scoring, fairness and validity in digital environments. An online result can be informative for curiosity, but its intended use must remain low stakes.

Modern batteries are organized around broad abilities rather than one undifferentiated “smartness” trait. Labels vary across publishers, but the recurring domains include:

The central rule in the AERA/APA/NCME testing standards is that evidence must support the interpretation and use of scores. “Is this a good test?” is incomplete. A better question is: “Is there evidence for using this score for this decision with this person?”

Why scores from different tests are not interchangeable

Many IQ scales are reported with a mean near 100 and a standard deviation near 15. That common scale creates an appearance of perfect comparability. It does not remove differences in norm year, country, language, age range, ceiling, item content, composite construction or reliability.

A score should travel with context: test and edition, administration date, age norms, confidence interval and the conditions under which it was obtained. There is no single best IQ test in the abstract. Comprehensive batteries give breadth; nonverbal tests reduce language demand; group tests answer large-scale educational questions; screeners trade detail for speed; online tests offer convenient low-stakes estimates.

The best type is the one whose design, norms and evidence match the person and the decision. For formal consequences, that means qualified administration and interpretation. For curiosity, it means choosing a transparent tool and resisting false precision.
