Urgent safety comes before matching

In the U.S., call or text 988 for crisis support. If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. See crisis and urgent support.

How this works

A starting route, not a diagnosis or provider recommendation.

The guide uses only the answers you choose in this browser tab. It does not send answers to providers, infer a diagnosis, or rank a provider based on payment.

1

Clarify your goal

Different goals point toward different kinds of support. The same person may use more than one route.

2

Check scope and access

Licence, location, service scope, age range, availability, cost and insurance still need to be verified.

3

Keep safety separate

Urgent or dangerous situations should never wait for a routine matching or comparison tool.

What therapy is for

Psychotherapy can help people work on distressing emotions, thoughts, behaviours, coping, relationships and functioning. It can be used alone or alongside medication.

When primary care matters

Mood, sleep, concentration and energy changes can sometimes overlap with medical conditions or medication effects. A broad medical evaluation can therefore be a useful first step.

When psychiatry matters

Psychiatry is especially relevant when medication evaluation, complex medication management, severe symptoms or specialist medical mental-health assessment are central to the goal.

Provider titles

Therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist are not interchangeable labels

“Therapist” is a broad practice label, psychologists have advanced psychology training and may provide therapy or formal testing, and psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. Exact scope and licensing still depend on jurisdiction.

Find Help principles

Neutral navigation before commercial matching.

DesperateMinds does not provide diagnosis or treatment. When provider matching is introduced later, payment cannot improve organic clinical suitability or ranking, and personal information is transferred only with explicit consent.

If psychiatry is the route you need

Use a search plan instead of a generic “near me” page

The psychiatry guide explains insurance directories, referrals, credentials, telehealth and what to prepare for a first appointment.
